Gold Star Raises Nearly $60,000 for Nonprofit Organizations Serving our Neighborhoods

Charitable efforts support longstanding partners and raise funds in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic, civil unrest

Cincinnati – As a business leader with a longstanding commitment to feeding and sustaining our community, Gold Star has a long history of working with partner organizations to nourish and protect the fabric of our communities. Now, following an outpour of support in what are extremely difficult times, Gold Star is proud to announce donations totaling $57,484 have been made to nonprofit and community organizations working hard to serve our neighborhoods.

Inspired by the #GivingTuesdayNow movement following the onset of the COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) global pandemic, Gold Star debuted its Coney Crate Initiative program designed to help nonprofit agencies and their missions to serve the community. Starting May 9, the initiative continued weekly through July with Gold Star donating a portion of the sales of all Coney Crates to a different designated nonprofit partner. Gold Star, thanks to the generosity of its guests, was able to raise a grand total of $35,969 for the eight nonprofit organizations: Athens County Food Pantry, Bethany House Services, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, Freestore Foodbank, MORTAR, OTR Chamber of Commerce and Sew Masks 4 Cincy.

In addition to the Coney Crate Initiative, Gold Star raised $11,814 for The Cure Starts Now via sales of its popular chili cans and $9,700 for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital through its “Milkshakes for Children’s Sake” program. This year, more than 1.18 million cans of Gold Star’s famous family recipe chili were sold in grocery stores and retailers across the Midwest. “Milkshakes for Children’s Sake” is part of a longstanding partnership with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, with whom it has collaborated with and donated more than $300,000 to since the 1990’s, raising funds for the most pressing needs of the hospital system. A portion of every milkshake sold at all Gold Star restaurants is donated back to the number three Honor Roll hospital from U.S. News & World Report’s 2020-21 Best Children’s Hospitals list.

“We mention the word ‘family’ frequently in our communications with the community for a very simple reason: We see everyone that comes through the doors of our neighborhood restaurants, be they an employee or a guest looking for a meal, as a family member. Through these initiatives, we have seen just how wonderful and generous each member of our family can be when it comes to helping others in a time that has brought us a crisis unlike anything we’ve seen in our lifetime,” said Gold Star CEO Roger David. “Through serving and dining together, we have seen people come together to do for others in a heartwarming manner definitive of what makes our extended family and our region so very special. We will get through this time together and, as this initiative has proven, have the potential to be stronger as a result.”
